  23.         I'm Dick Sutphen and this tape is a studio-recorded,
  24.     expanded version of a talk I delivered at the World Congress
  25.     of Professional Hypnotists Convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.
  26.     Although the tape carries a copyright to protect it from
  27.     unlawful duplication for sale by other companies, in this
  28.     case, I invite individuals to make copies and give them to
  29.     friends or anyone in a position to communicate this
  30.     information.

  32.          Although I've been interviewed about the subject on many
  33.     local and regional radio and TV talk shows, large-scale mass
  34.     communication appears to be blocked, since it could result in
  35.     suspicion or investigation of the very media presenting it or
  36.     the sponsors that support the media. Some government agencies
  37.     do not want this information generally known. Nor do the
  38.     Born-Again Christian movement, cults, and many human-potential
  39.     trainings.
  40.  
  41.         Everything I will relate only exposes the surface of the
  42.     problem. I don't know how the misuse of these techniques can
  43.     be stopped. I don't think it is possible to legislate against
  44.     that which often cannot be detected; and if those who
  45.     legislate are using these techniques, there is little hope of
  46.     affecting laws to govern usage. I do know that the first step
  47.     to initiate change is to generate interest. In this case, that
  48.     will probably only result from an underground effort.
  49.  
  50.         In talking about this subject, I am talking about my own
  51.     business.  I know it, and I know how effective it can be. I
  52.     produce hypnosis and subliminal tapes and, in some of my
  53.     seminars, I use conversion tactics to assist participants to
  54.     become independent and self-sufficient. But, anytime I use
  55.     these techniques, I point out that I am using them, and those
  56.     attending have a choice to participate or not. They also know
  57.     what the desired result of participation will be.

  59.         So, to begin, I want to state the most basic of all facts
  60.     about brainwashing: IN THE ENTIRE HISTORY OF MAN, NO ONE HAS
  61.     EVER BEEN BRAINWASHED AND REALIZED, OR BELIEVED, THAT HE HAD
  62.     BEEN BRAINWASHED.  Those who have been brainwashed will
  63.     usually passionately defend their manipulators, claiming they
  64.     have simply been "shown the light" . . .  or have been
  65.     transformed in miraculous ways.

  67.     The Birth of Conversion
  68.   
  69.        CONVERSION is a "nice" word for BRAINWASHING . . . and any
  70.     study of brainwashing has to begin with a study of Christian
  71.     revivalism in eighteenth century America. Apparently, Jonathan
  72.     Edwards accidentally discovered the techniques during a
  73.     religious crusade in 1735 in Northampton, Massachusetts.  By
  74.     inducing guilt and acute apprehension and by increasing the
  75.     tension, the "sinners" attending his revival meetings would
  76.     break down and completely submit. Technically, what Edwards
  77.     was doing was creating conditions that wipe the brain slate
  78.     clean so that the mind accepts new programming. The problem
  79.     was that the new input was negative. He would tell them,
  80.     "You're a sinner!  You're destined for hell!"
  81.  
  82.         As a result, one person committed suicide and another
  83.     attempted suicide.  And the neighbors of the suicidal converts
  84.     related that they, too, were affected so deeply that, although
  85.     they had found "eternal salvation," they were obsessed with a
  86.     diabolical temptation to end their own lives.

  88.         Once a preacher, cult leader, manipulator or authority
  89.     figure creates the brain phase to wipe the brain-slate clean,
  90.     his subjects are wide open. New input, in the form of
  91.     suggestion, can be substituted for their previous ideas.
  92.     Because Edwards didn't turn his message positive until the end
  93.     of the revival, many accepted the negative suggestions and
  94.     acted, or desired to act, upon them.
  95.  
  96.         Charles J. Finney was another Christian revivalist who
  97.     used the same techniques four years later in mass religious
  98.     conversions in New York. The techniques are still being used
  99.     today by Christian revivalists, cults, human-potential
  100.     trainings, some business rallies, and the United States Armed
  101.     Services . . . to name just a few.
  102.  
  103.         Let me point out here that I don't think most revivalist
  104.     preachers realize or know they are using brainwashing
  105.     techniques. Edwards simply stumbled upon a technique that
  106.     really worked, and others copied it and have continued to copy
  107.     it for over two hundred years. And the more sophisticated our
  108.     knowledge and technology become, the more effective the
  109.     conversion. I feel strongly that this is one of the major
  110.     reasons for the increasing rise in Christian fundamentalism,
  111.     especially the televised variety, while most of the orthodox
  112.     religions are declining.

  114.     The Three Brain Phases
  115.  
  116.         The Christians may have been the first to successfully
  117.     formulate brainwashing, but we have to look to Pavlov, the
  118.     Russian scientist, for a technical explanation. In the early
  119.     1900s, his work with animals opened the door to further
  120.     investigations with humans. After the revolution in Russia,
  121.     Lenin was quick to see the potential of applying Pavlov's
  122.     research to his own ends.

  124.         Three distinct and progressive states of transmarginal
  125.     inhibition were identified by Pavlov. The first is the
  126.     EQUIVALENT phase, in which the brain gives the same response
  127.     to both strong and weak stimuli. The second is the PARADOXICAL
  128.     phase, in which the brain responds more actively to weak
  129.     stimuli than to strong. And the third is the ULTRA-
  130.     PARADOXICAL phase, in which conditioned responses and behavior
  131.     patterns turn from positive to negative or from negative to
  132.     positive.

  134.         With the progression through each phase, the degree of
  135.     conversion becomes more effective and complete. The way to
  136.     achieve conversion are many and varied, but the usual first
  137.     step in religious or political brainwashing is to work on the
  138.     emotions of an individual or group until they reach an
  139.     abnormal level of anger, fear, excitement, or nervous tension.

  141.         The progressive result of this mental condition is to
  142.     impair judgement and increase suggestibility. The more this
  143.     condition can be maintained or intensified, the more it
  144.     compounds. Once catharsis, or the first brain phase, is
  145.     reached, the complete mental takeover becomes easier. Existing
  146.     mental programming can be replaced with new patterns of
  147.     thinking and behavior.

  149.         Other often-used physiological weapons to modify normal
  150.     brain functions are fasting, radical or high sugar diets,
  151.     physical discomforts, regulation of breathing, mantra chanting
  152.     in meditation, the disclosure of awesome mysteries, special
  153.     lighting and sound effects, programed response to incense, or
  154.     intoxicating drugs.

  156.         The same results can be obtained in contemporary
  157.     psychiatric treatment by electric shock treatments and even by
  158.     purposely lowering
